Austria: Records and Stories
Early records in Vienna: A list of Viennese inhabitants from the period 1780-1848 records Baruch ZWIEBACH, a Hebrew teacher in the households of Jakob Teweles and Jakob Kremsier, around 1800. Baruch Zwiebach was born in Rethe (probably now Reca, Slovakia, about 50 mi. east of Vienna). Waehring Cemetery burials include Theresia Gybs nee ZWIEBACK, born 1777 in Rethe, died Dec 3 1850. Theresia may have been the sister to Baruch. Theresia was the wife of Simon GYBS, born 1764, died Apr 3 1830.
Marriage records of 1908 show a marriage of Oskar Zwieback and Gisela Deutsch. Oskar, born in 1878 in Osijek, Croatia, was the son of Ignatz Zwieback and Malvine Weinfeld. This family can be seen at:
The Ignaz Zwieback/Malvine Weinfeld family of Osijek, Croatia.
Several City and Telephone Directories listed Zwiebacks in Vienna.
The 1908 City Directory listed 5 Zwiebacks: Emanuel, Josef, Ludwig, Oskar, and Samuel.
The 1929 Phone Directory also listed 5 Zwiebacks: Anny, Irene, Josef, Ludwig, and Oskar.
The 1938 Phone Directory listed just 4 Zwiebacks: Irene, Ludwig, Oskar and wife Gisela.
Three ZWIEBACK brothers, Ludwig, Samuel, and Emanuel, from Bonyhad, Hungary, owned a large high-fashion business in Vienna. This can be seen at:
The Ludwig ZWIEBACK & Bruder Co. Business of Vienna.
The family of Samuel and his two wives Josefine Boehm and Eleonore Grohs, can be seen at:The SAMUEL ZWIEBACK Family from Bonyhad and Vienna.
Samuel’s brother Ludwig Zwieback'sfamily can be seen at:The Ludwig ZWIEBACK/SINGER Family from Bonyhad and Vienna.
My father, Ludwig Zwieback shown below at age 19, lived in Vienna for 3 years
and was not related (that we know) to the Zwieback Family from Bonyhad described above.
His father Antal married into the Pollak family of Nagykanizsa, Hungary. That
family can be seen at:
