The ZWIEBACK Family Name

Southern Hungary, Croatia & Serbia: Records and Stories

An example of the various spellings, frequencies, and locations of the ZWIEBACK family in Hungary can be seen from a recent effort by Janos Bogardi listing all names found in a Shopkeepers and Craftsman Name book in 1891; "Directory of craftsmen and merchants in Hungary / ... ed. by József Jekelfalussy. - Budapest : Pesti Könyvnyomda Részvény-Társaság, [1892]. - lxvi, [2], 2435 p". Names listed together with numbers and County locations follow: ZWIEBECK (1) in Temes, ZWIBACH (3) in Budapest, ZWIEBACH (3) in Budapest, Tolna, and Bacs-Bodrog, ZWYBACH (3) in Bacs-Bodrog, ZVIBACH (1) in Tolna.

A current map of this area can be seen at:

The name Zwieback had several forms of spelling because records were made as the names were heard, not on the basis of other written documents.

The oldest records I have with the name are as a result of the July 23, 1787 Royal Edict for Hungarian Jews to take on German-sounding Surnames. These records showed the following in Bonyhad: Herschl Mayr (born 1744) changed his name to Israel Zwiback, Volf Herschl (born 1764, son of Herschl) changed to Volf Zwiback.

1787 Census - Jewish Name Changes
Israel & Volf Zwiebak, Bonyhad, Tolna County

There were many subsequent census records entries showing Volf Zwiback, but with various spellings. The following entries show the various spellings (with census dates): Wolf Zwibat (1789), Wolf Zwibac (1791), Volf Zvibat (1793), Volf Zvibak (1794), Volf Zvibach (1798), Wolf Zwieback (1807), Volf Tzibach (1809).

Jewish and Census records provided various entries for Philip Zwieback, born 1770, died 1852, These entries were Philip Zvipack (1793), Phillip Czvibak (1806), Philip Zwybak (1807), Philipusz Zwiebac (1821), Fulop Cwipack (1846).

Other Zwiebacks found: Janos Zwiback, born about 1797, died 1851; Herman Zwiebach, born about 1812, died 1864; Charlotte Zwiebach, born about 1792, died 1876; Jozef Zwiebach (son of Herman) born 1854 and married 1880; Ignatz Zwieback Pollak born 1836 and married 1860.

A well-documented Zwieback family from Bonyhad was that of Josef Zwieback/Wilhelmine Singer, a Merchant. They had 3 sons and 1 daughter, all born 1842-50. They were Franziska (1842), Samuel (1843), Ludwig (1844), and Emanuel (1850).

The family of Franziska can be seen at:

The family of Ludwig can be seen at:

and the family of Samuel can be seen at:

Jewish records show that Antal Zwieback, my Grandfather, was born about 1854 in Kisherend (was Herend), Baranya County. He married Fani Pollak on Dec. 25, 1877 in Kiskanizsa. His father was Leopold Zwieback. Antal and Fani Zwieback had seven children: Vilmos (born 1878, died 1878), Henrik (born 1879), Viktor (born 1881), Izidor (born 1883, died 1909), Gizella (born 1884), Paula (born 1887, died 1891), and Lajos (born 1891, died 1981).

This family history (still quite incomplete) can be seen at:

Descendants of Leopold ZWIEBACK from Southern Hungary.

Despite the indication that Antal Zwieback came from Baranya County, the family name Zwieback cannot be found in the 1848 Jewish Census for this County. Also, the name Zwieback cannot be found in the Jewish records in the 1851-57 time interval.

The 1848 Census recorded three CVIBACH families living SE of Pecs in Baranya County, all within about 10 mi. distance of each other. They were as follows:

Herman (b.1821 Bonyhad) and Magdolna (b.1816 Bonyhad), with son Abraham (b.1842 Obanya) living in Tottos (4555N01833E).

Vilmos (b.1820) and Maria (b.1825) living in Lanycsok (4600N01838E).

Herman (b.1807 Virago) and Anna (b.1818 KisHerend), with daughter Erze (b.1847 KisHerend) living in KisHerend (4558N01820E).

The 1923-1942 City Directories of Pecs listed a Lajos Zwiebach, Grocer & Merchant, at two addresses; Szigeti 68 and Kaszarnya 29.

Records in Vienna and Osijek show a number of Zwiebacks with birth dates from about 1850.

Two well-documented families can be seen at:

The Ignaz Zwieback/Malvine Weinfeld family of Osijek.

and

A published obituary in Novi Sad (was Ujvidek), Serbia in 1902 announced the death of Salamon Zwibach, born 1820.
