Poland and Ukraine: Records & Stories
Much recent information has been added for families that have immigrated to the U.S. from eastern Europe. These places where Zwiebacks (or variants) lived were, pre-1914, mostly in Austria-Hungary, mostly in Galicia, and Ukraine.
POLAND
A well-documented Zweiback family from Goworowo was the Shalom and Shaina Zweiback family. They had 4 children, of which 3 came with families to the U.S.in the early 1900's.

The Ostrow Mazowiecka "Books of Residents" project (JRI-P) has produced 43 entries for CWEJBAK in the surname column. Ostrow Mazowiecka is located 100 km northeast of Warsaw. A family that immigrated to the U.S. from this town was the Mendl Zweiback and Leah Iwrej family.

It should be noted that a Mariem Cwejbak lived in Ostrow Mazowiecka in 1902. She married Icek Aron Tylim and they had a daughter Ruchla Leja Tylim.
Another "Zwieback" from the same area was Israel Yaakov Cvejbak
The family was started in Odessa and carried the name Tsveybak in the USSR, now Zwieback in the U.S., and can be seen at:

Henryk Zwieback is listed in the JRI-P as having died on 18 July 1937 at age 85 in Warsaw, Poland.
Babchie Shpond-Zwieback is listed in the Tysmienica Memorial Book published by "Hamenora" Tel Aviv in 1974
Rudolph Zuieback was born 1886 in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and came to the U.S. at age 7.
LITHUANIA
A recent addition to this section is a family from around Vilnius that came to the U.S. This is is the Zwiback/Hindin family and they can be seen at:

UKRAINE
Kuty, now in Ukraine, had a significant Jewish population in the late 1800s. A part of the Jacob Zwieback family that came to the U.S. from Kuty was the
Samuel Zweiback and Sophie Druck family and they can be seen at:

Zwiebacks from Kuty were registered in Vienna in the early 1900s: Simcha (born 1882) with wife Hudie and daughters Reisel (b.1907) and Fetka (b.1909) living in Vienna in 1913. Also,Arnold (born 1894) living in Vienna in 1919.
Another Zwiebach family from this area, part of Austria prior to 1914, who came to the U.S. was the

A large Zwiebach family beginning with Avraham Yitzhak, with a son Max who came to the U.S., has an uncertain source location, probably in eastern Galicia.

One of the earliest Zwieback family records in this area concern Moshe Zwieback, born about 1820, in Sevastopol, a large city in Crimea.

Another family in Crimea that came to the U.S. was the Zwibak/Bearfeld family from Simferopal. A member of this family, Mischa Zwibak sang in the NY Metropolitan Opera and the Yiddish theater.
