Introduction
Novi Sad (4515N1950E), Serbia, is a city on the Danube river and the administrative seat of Vojvodina province. Prior to 1918, as part of Austro-Hungary, the city was known as Ujvidek. Jews first settled here in the 16th century. In the 18th century, many Jews came here from Nikolsburg, Moravia. A large synagogue was first built in 1829. As of 1941, the beginning of the Holocaust, there were 4,000 Jews living here within a population of 80,000. The ZWIBACH family were always merchants and owned a granary until 1944.
