Descendants of the Ignaz Zwieback/Malvine Weinfeld Family from Osijek, Croatia

Introduction

Osjiek (45.55N18.73E), about 211 km east of Zagreb, is a large city on the Drava River, in Croatia. It is only 82 km south of Bonyhad, Hungary and 58 km SSE of Kisherend, Hungary. Osjiek has been known as Esseg, Slavonia, Austria; later as Esze’k, Verocze, Hungary, and now Osijek. This information is based on vital records from the Osijek area and Vienna, and most importantly, from Julianna Drexler. Many thanks to Wolf-Erich Eckstein of Vienna for his help.

Generation One

1. Ignaz¹ Zwieback was born circa 1850. He married Malvine Weinfeld. He died circa 1920 in Osijek, Croatia.

Malvine Weinfeld died after 1932 in Osijek, Croatia.

ii. Margit was born. She married Lujo Frohlich in Karlovac, Croatia. She died circa 1965 in Zagreb, Croatia.

4. iv. Albert, born 15 Jul 1885; married Erna Steinman.
5. v. Gisela, born 1886; married Sandor Svarcz.
6. vi. Dragutin "Karl", born 1887; married Margareta Schon.

Generation Two

2. Oskar² Zwieback (Ignaz¹) was born on 17 Mar 1878 in Osijek, Croatia. He married Gisela Deutsch on 1 May 1908 in Vienna, Austria. He died circa 1942; Holocaust.

He lived in 1930 in Gumpendorfer Str.144, Vienna, Austria. In 1938 he prepared Property Declaration for Nazis, Vienna, Austria. He may have lived in 1939 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Gisela Deutsch was born on 16 May 1885 in Vienna, Austria. She was the daughter of Bernhard Deutsch (b.1857, d. 1928 Vienna) and Julie Kohn (b. 1860, d. 12.10.1928 Vienna) She died circa 1942; Holocaust.

Children of Oskar² Zwieback and Gisela Deutsch all born in Vienna, Austria, were as follows:

iii. Anny was born on 16 May 1917. She died on 3 Feb 1933 in Vienna, Austria, at age 15. She was buried on 5 Feb 1933 in Zentralfriedhof T1 20-17-59, Vienna, Austria.

3. Jeanette² Zwieback (Ignaz¹) was born in Osijek, Croatia. She married Dani Reichsman in Osijek, Croatia. She died circa 1965 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Dani Reichsman died circa 1944 in Auschwitz, Poland.

i. Mirko³ was also known as Fritz Reichsman.

4. Albert² Zwieback (Ignaz¹) was born on 15 Jul 1885 in Osijek, Croatia. He married Erna Steinman on 2 Jun 1912 in II, Lassingleithenplatz 4, Vienna, Austria. He died circa 1915 in Russia; Died in WWI on the Russian Front. He was buried in Vienna, Austria.

Erna Steinman was born on 2 Feb 1894 in Rijeka, Croatia.

i. Heinz Ludwig³ was born on 17 Mar 1913 in Vienna, Austria. He died after 1970 in Paris, France.

As of 1946, he was also known as Henri Vibac. He lived circa 1992 in Paris, France.

5. Gisela² Zwieback (Ignaz¹) was born in 1884 in Osijek, Croatia. She married Sandor Svarcz. She died in 1938 in Kapsovar, Hungary; Cause of Death: Cancer.

Sandor Svarcz was born on May 4, 1880 in Kapsovar, Hungary. He died in 1945 in Auschwitz, Poland.

6. Dragutin "Karl"² Zwieback (Ignaz¹) was born in 1887 in Osijek, Croatia. He married Margareta Schon. He was named as a founder of the "Judea Association", a club of Jewish academics in the Univ. of Zagreb in 1920. He died circa 1943 in Vienna, Austria; maybe as a hostage.

He lived in 1905 in II, Donan str. 89, Vienna, Austria; University Student.

His name was changed to Karl Zwieback.

Margareta Schon died circa 1975 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Children of Dragutin "Karl"² Zwieback and Margareta Schon were:

10. i. Gustav³, born 10 May 1918 in Zagreb, Croatia; married Augusta Rivola.

Generation Three

7. Gertrude³ Zwieback (Oskar², Ignaz¹) was born in Vienna, Austria. She married Benno Bernkopf in Vienna, Austria. She died in Bronx, New York, USA.

Benno Bernkopf was born on 30 Jun 1909. He emigrated before Dec 1938 from Vienna, Austria. He died on 9 May 1991 in Bronx, New York, USA, at age 81.

Children of Gertrude³ Zwieback and Benno Bernkopf are:

8. Elsie³ Zwieback (Oskar², Ignaz¹) was born in Vienna, Austria. She married Walter Roth on 25 Dec 1930 in Vienna, Austria. She died after 1974 in Paraguay.

She emigrated before Dec 1938 from Vienna, Austria.

Walter Roth was born on 15 Feb 1907. He died after 1974 in Paraguay.

His name was changed to Gustav Cvibak while at Zagreb University. His name was changed to Gustav Cvijak when he moved to Brazil.

Augusta Rivola was born on 20 Dec 1923 in Faenza, Italy.
